rec.radio.amateur.moderated

I saw this post on QRZ today by Paul K3FU – thought it was worth re-posting here:

(first part of the message (delimited by the > pointy things) is from http://www.big-8.org/

(Read more at: RESULT:  rec.radio.amateur.moderated will be created)

I’d like to thank our Usenet Groups Mentor, Tim Skirvin, and the rest of the Big-8 Board.  I’d especially like to thank the readership of rec.radio.amateur.*, who followed up with many positive comments in support of this proposal.  I certainly would not have been able to bring this proposal to Usenet without the assistance of the rest of our moderation team.  The Request for Discussion (RFD) process has also yielded two additional, highly-qualified, volunteers to serve as moderators, and we look forward to working with them as well.

The administrators at Panix assure us that the newgroup control message will be honored immediately, and automatically, so we should be ready to take submissions for the new newsgroup very shortly after that.

We will work with the readers to assist them in getting the newsgroup created at sites that do not automatically honor newgroup control messages.

If you do not have local access to news, this new newsgroup should also be available shortly at Google:

Google Groups

We will also seek to submit our Posting Guidelines for cross-posting to the rec.radio.info, rec.answers, and news.answers newsgroups to help further publicize this new newsgroup.

I have relayed a pointer to this message to the other rec.radio.amateur.* newsgroups not cross-posted to in the original announcement.  I have also passed pointers to the QRZ.com and eHam.net blogs.  I am grateful for the support and responsiveness of the QRZ team in getting the RFD announcements promptly posted as news items on the front page of QRZ. Our contacts at the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) have also expressed tentative interest in adding an announcement for the new newsgroup as a “Stray” item in a future issue of QST Magazine.

We hope to earn your trust, and obtain your participation, in our new newsgroup.

While I don’t frequent rec.radio.* very often, It should be interesting to see what happens. Unless you’re into reading spam or downloading kiddie porn, Usenet isn’t really very useful for much these days (Those of you who frequented usenet in the ‘good ole days’ know what I’m talking about). Anything moderated on Usenet is a step in the right direction…. the amount of spam and stupidity that lurks on newsgroups these days saddens me beyond all possible limit (well, not really… but it’s concerning).

I wish those involved with this venture the best of luck!

Hamsexy Net 2-21-07

Hamsexy NetIt was a good net as always.
Jaymz had some microphone problems so K3BM filled in and the following brethren came in to say “Hi” :

KD8CPP – Tyler
KC0WFC – Justin
VE3HBD – Bryan
KE4NOY – Matt
N8FQ – Joe
VA2VAX – Jean
VE1WRG – Derek
K2JSV – Jaymz
VE6PWT – Robert
VE3XLS – Mike
VA3FIS – Tom
KC8ZLK – Dan

Jaymz had a few seconds of live microphone and it alternated between sounding like an echo chamber to a midget caught in a band saw. Perhaps he will show pictures of the microphone burning up after he tossed it in the fire.

A pre-emptive strike backfires…

There was a thread on RadioReference about Sundance Citizens on Patrol’s website, a site about some civilians deputizing themselves with ranks and doing traffic assist. There really wasn’t much to it, and we decided not to post anything on the front page about it. The self-imposed ranks were kinda funny, but there wasn’t much meat there. A thread was created on our forums regarding the thread on RR, a few comments were made. We weren’t going to bother posting it on this site, as we didn’t really see the point. They seemed innocent enough, and didn’t do anything to us.

That is, until one of their members, a Capt. Peden, decided to PM one of our moderators with an utterly ridiculous threat:

Dear Moderator of Sundance Citizens Patrol Thread,

I find the comments reguarding Sundance Citizens Patrol and Emergency Services on your site to be slanderous at best and am requesting the it be immediately removed from the site and/ or the forum to be closed. The material is offensive and vulgur and needs to be removed immediately. If this is not done so in a timely manner I will report this website to my attorney who will take legal action. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that it is still illegal to slander someone and the moderator and or creater of the website will be held liable for anything posted on their website. This may include fines, penalties, closure of the site, and if I remember correctly I believe jail time as well. I don’t know I guess I will need to contact him. But in any case our rank structure is no ones business, but our own since it is used internally only. In addition personal comments reguarding myself are just plain rude and that is called sexual harrassment… is there a need for me to go any further?

Woah. Hold the phone. Threats? Threats of legal action? Sexual harassment? Against an innocent website, and a moderator who had nothing to do with the thread, who also happens to be a police officer? This will not stand.

If this is the kind of public relations that Sundance Citizens on Patrol has, we here at Hamsexy question their intentions and management. Accusing us of libel (learn the difference between libel and slander before you go accusing people of it) and sexual harrassment against Peden (who is a female), where clearly none exists? Is this how this group deals with such matters, falsely accusing us of crimes in an attempt to scare us into locking an innocent thread on our message forums? I don’t think so. We are consulting our legal team as to what to do next. Accusations of sexual harassment are very serious, and we will be debating about what to do next. Stay tuned.

Happy Lunar New Year

0131chinesenewyear.gifHappy Lunar New Year to all of our Asian readers and friends. I was in Taiwan for Chinese New Year last year – and it was a blast…. 8 days off right after Christmas… No wonder the Chinese were inventing paper and food while the rest of the world was…. well…. not inventing paper and food, I guess.
It’s especially important for us, seeing as though 2007 on the Chinese calender is the Year of the Pig.

All of us here at Hamsexy wish you and yours a very good Year of Ham! Gong xie fa coi!

MAARC midnight testing session!

MAARC logoThose of you in or near the west Michigan area might be interested in knowing that the Muskegon Area Amateur Radio Council is going to hold a midnight VE session at their clubhouse in North Muskegon to celebrate the end of the code requirement. The festivities will begin on the evening of Thursday the 22nd, with the test being held Friday morning at 12:01 AM Eastern Standard Time. We’ll have pizza and snacks, and of course the radios will be running. We’ll try to contact W1AW’s special event and get a few of those “first contact” certificates.

As mentioned before, this will be going on at the MAARC clubhouse on 2888 Scenic Drive in North Muskegon. To get there, take US-31 to Skyline Drive (US-31 Business exit), then get on M-120 and follow it north, where it becomes Whitehall Road just over the bridge by the power plant. Take Whitehall Road north to River Road, then turn west and follow River Road to Scenic Drive. Go north and you will soon find the sign by the road indicating the location of the clubhouse’s driveway. There will, of course, be a talk-in on the 146.94 repeater.

As I write this, I am left wondering why the “west MI bureau chief” Mark K8MHZ didn’t post this by now…

Update! The session was somewhat successful. We had about 3 people show up to upgrade, two of which did so: Shawn KB8UFI got a paper upgrade, and Don KC8SHZ passed the test. Unfortunately, the HF bands proved to be useless, only two contacts were made, neither of which involved the USA’s first two no-code Generals. But we tried.

KI4SKN – Tim
VE6PWT – Robert
KC8ZLK – Daniel

No real topic tonight, so we talked about what projects are going on and it was good to hear a bunch of hammies thinking about the general license. Getting on the air is the only way to start making the OF’s either accept you or move on.

Catch you all next week !
