The moral fight against Hamsexy continues

A friend of the site directed us to this posting on the QRZ forums. It looks like, after being drummed out of the Dayton Hamvention executive for improperly speaking on behalf of the executive by declaring us persona non gratis at future Hamventions, Dave Dextradeur W1GBA is still trying to impose his morals on others.

Comment is appreciated….

This guy can go F*ck himself, give me a break.

We are the ones KEEPING this a hobby, instead of some uptight old losers club like some of the Legions have become (not to bash the legion, I hang there, and they like the young blood at the one I frequent)

He is just another wanker, just like the rest of the wankers.

Oh and as for professionalism — I love this site, but when it’s time to get serious, we are serious (example, 3 members of HamSexy were directly responsible for spotting 1 funnell cloud, 1 tornado and ensuring environment canada got the warning’s out)

Kudos to Hamvention for canning his ass.

    Hello.

    So, what is this?
Hamsexy is here to poke fun at what should be a hobby.
The thing at Dayton? is this really THAT bad.
Next thing you know, we will have people selling computers, scanners, bubble pack FRS radios, everything that ham radio is not,, WAIT! we are already there!

w0pee says “Does Hamsexy provide a positive image of Amateur Radio? Absolutely not — which is why I don’t frequent the site.”

If he doesn’t frequent the site, then how does he know whether or not it creates a positive image of AMATEUR radio?

  9. 442 says:

Maybe he peeks through the keyhole from time to time?

  10. Hammy says:

Come on, I am a newly licensed ham, and all I can tell you is that this site actually helped me make my decision to get into ham radio because I finally found people who were like me. You know, the kind of people who don’t think that they need to run to a fire scene to provide communication services (although occasionally I might go and look), as I understand that all public safety organizations have radios and they are fully capable of using them.

I understand that there are times when ham radio is useful, ie: large disasters where communications are needed that cannot be handled by public safety, or as in the video posted on this site, to get weather warnings out to people.

People really need to realize that this is a hobby first and you are not going to go out and save the world because you have a HT.

In closing, all I have to say is thanks HAMSEXY for allowing me to see that there are other individuals in this hobby who think some of the actions of other hams are somewhat outrageous at times.

  11. grinthock says:

Perfect. Hammy has just made the comment that puts the nails in the coffin of anyone who dislikes Hamsexy.

Anyone or Anything that bring even ONE MORE individual to Ham radio deserves high praise, with the dwindling numbers the hobby is dying, and the band space is slowing getting taken back by the FCC/CRTC we need more active amateurs.

Thanks for your post Hammy, you just proved that Hamsexy does the one thing that both QRZ, eHam and many other groups have so many issues with, bring in more hams.

  12. richard says:

“Thanks for your post Hammy, you just proved that Hamsexy does the one thing that both QRZ, eHam and many other groups have so many issues with, bring in more hams.”

Exactly. The OM’s may want to stick their heads in the sand, and refuse to accept that their numbers are falling precipitously (oh, another big word over here on hamsexy!), but the reality of the situation is that ham radio will DIE in the next 25 years if we, as a community, can not attract a new wave of young operators.

And making ham radio funny, entertaining and enjoyable is one way to do it. And while we want to admit it or not, operating CW on a 50 year old tube radio is NOT going to attract very many new young users. In this time of computers, the internet, flashy bells and whistles, archaic machinery and methods of communication are quite passé.

Any OM who sits around and denies that smelly, grumpy and fat white men are de rigeur at hamfests today is either: delusional, in denial or one of the smelly, grumpy and/or fat.

Whether the old guard likes it or not, they are rapidly decreasing in numbers. You can bet that there are some big commercial interests around the world that would LOVE to get their hands on a lot of the bands we currently call home. And they are sitting here with baited breath waiting for ham radio to die out and have those bands go on the block.

But if holding onto how things “used” to be is your thing, you have nothing to complain about when you call CQ on HF and there is no one left to reply.

    (Rant over)

You know what else I found incredibly amusing about Dave’s post?

The topic of his post is: “Leadership by PERSONAL EXAMPLE, Do as I Do, Not as I Say”

So does that mean he wants the ham radio community to run around, overstepping their authority, throwing their imaginary weight (well, in some hams cases, not so imaginary) because you have a grief with a thing that hits a little too close to home?

I think Dave really needs to take a good look at himself before preaching from the pulpit.

I happen to be a member of hamsexy.com as well, and I find their website refreshing…it’s funny as hell, and I don’t think there’s a malicious bone in any of their bodies. Have we all forgotten that a hobby is supposed to be fun? I got into radio to relax, and enjoy myself.
And you know, Dave, I think we’re experiencing your sour grapes. If you had any guts, you would go to that website and speak your mind.

I think that Wee-One-Gibberish-Blabbering-Asinine has been committed. Either that or he is in denial that he showed himself to be an utter ASS not once but TWICE in less than two months, BOTH TIMES in front of THOUSANDS of people.

If I were him, I know that I would make myself scarce for quite some time. Then again, it’s quite possible that the old fart thinks that he is so far above all of us that we don’t rate his comments.

It is funny that he has not yet responded to the 4-PAGES of replies to his original post on QRZ.

What is even better that far and above anything else, the replies have been IN-FAVOR or HAMSEXY.COM!

I think that at Hamvention 2006, we need shirts that say, “I frequent HamSexy.Com and *I* put W1GBA in his place!”

OK, my favorite bit of jibberish is the following:

“We as leaders of those who will “assume our watch” when that SUPREME ELMER calls us to that “great hamfest in the sky” need to look inward at ourselves and be sure that we are projecting the example that we want our underlings to follow.”

WTF??? The supreme Elmer?? The great hamfest in the sky?? Sounds like this guy has been standing a little too close to the antenna while transmitting.

That thread is really growing…nice…though Hamsexy has now been referred to as a “competing” website.

  21. VE3HBD says:

The justification for my banning from QRZ was the fact I had a link to Hamsexy in both my sig line and my profile. “QRZ EDITOR” (who still won’t reveal who he is), said that Hamsexy is a competing website, and that having links on QRZ is taking away his advertising revenues (i’m paraphrasing here).

I’m still trying to figure out where Dave found all of this obscene and pornographic material in this site…. What’s on here is pretty tame, and if he’s outraged by it, well then man… this guy needs to grow some skin. I’m sure he gets outraged by soemone passing him on the street wih green hair.

There are a few questions I’d LOVE to pose to the thread, but alas… My posting priviledges are still gone… sigh…

  22. 442 says:

You have to understand that in some cultures, showing even a little “ankle” (believe it or not) might be viewed as pornographic.

Let’s just say that folk like our friend put the “Fun” in FUNDAMENTALIST.

Here’s a copy of the email I just sent Fred (aa7bq) – owner of qrz.com for deleting me from the qrz.com database. This will piss him off, but it’s true!

I for one am very suprised you even acknowledged the existance of K1MAN considering you don’t list him in your database. Consiquently, you don’t list quite a large number of ham’s in you database. Why is this?

Your database (on qrz) is considered to be the largest and most accurate in the world next to the FCC, etc. Many consider your site’s database to be equal to the FCC’s. Knowing this as you do, how can you delete and not represent ham’s with valid callsigns? Just because you don’t like them or their attitude doesn’t give you the right or duty to delete them from the lookup-database.

Since it is your site, you do have the right to make any corrections / deletions you want. However, in order to do this, you need to explain that in your callsign database. Something like (QRZ callsign database, of ham’s we choose to represent).

I for one said ‘Fix it or Nix it’ as many others have simply because your editors would not fix a simple problem that we were having at the time. Simple ones like e-mail address, biography, login problems, etc. Rather than fix these problems, you delete them.

This is very pathetic and absolutely childish. I would be embarassed to own and advertise a site that acted in this manner. I would expect such behavior from 10-yr old children or a ‘clique’ in high-school. But this behavoir is not professional an any way, shape form, or fashion whatsoever.

You really need to reconsider your policy of de-listing ham’s rather than working toward the common goal of enhancing / furthering the hobby and it’s continual growth and development.

What you’re doing is downing the hobby and turning it into a buddy-buddy system. As many problems as this hobby faces at this point in time – BPL, Lessening of Technical requirements, degrading behavior on the bands, etc. – this is one time when ALL ham’s need to stick together (ALL ham’s) and fight for the cause.

What you’re doing is not right and your site should be boy-cotted until your policy changes and all ham’s that’ve been deleted are re-listed on your database.

P.S. – I’m not just a loud-mouth from 3.943, i’m also a registered member and regular Net-Control Station for the 3.905 Century Club Net. If I behaved and acted that badly on the air, the Century Club Net wouldn’t dare let me represent them by being Net Control for their 40-meter SSB Early Net (the most heavily populated net they run).
And, certainly do not deserve to not be represented by any Ham Radio Callsign Lookup Database – all because your editors wouldn’t fix a simple problem for me.
