SUBJECT: DISMISSAL OF COMPLAINT AGAINST VEC

Dear Mr. Wait:

On August 19, 2006, you filed a complaint against the W4VEC Volunteer Examiner Coordinator concerning an examination session on August 18, 2006. You alleged that an applicant, whom you were unable to name, was allowed to test without sufficient identification and that when you objected, you were threatened and asked to step outside the examination room.

Information submitted to the Enforcement Bureau in response to your complaint indicates that the applicant was too young to have a driver’s license, but had a learner’s permit and other forms of identification; that he was known by the other VE; and that he was accompanied by his uncle, a well-known Amateur Radio licensee who vouched for his identity. The information submitted also indicates that you had to be ejected from the examination building and that, as a result of this incident, you have been disqualified as VE.

Your complaint is dismissed as frivolous. Furthermore, it is unfortunate that the limited resources of the Enforcement Bureau had to be used to evaluate your allegations.

Thanks to Doownek on the Hamsexy Forums for bringing this to our attention, and thanks to N5KSK for  doing the legwork and determining that this old fart was http://www.qrz.com/callsign/W4LNX (complete with photo)

Richard on the forums summed it up: I especially like the end: “Thanks for wasting our fucking time.”

Seems to me this is an instance of “Kick me out, will they? I’ll just sic the FCC on their asses!”

How many brain cells does it take to realize that the kid had other forms of ID and someone who would vouch for him? I’m willing to bet that there’s more to the story than this guy just thinking that the kid didn’t have proper ID, probably either didn’t like the kid’s uncle or didn’t want another no-code tech to get licensed.

I especially love how he lost his VE status because he flipped out.

Yet another story that proves ham radio is serious business.

    Douche….

I agree, there had to be more to this story. Some old fart ham with a personal problem with either the new young ham or the guy vouching for him.

  5. ku4my says:

His ‘pals’ should have beat the shit out of him right there outside the testing session. No doubt that retarded bag of shit really made the new young ham feel all warm welcome and comfy. I wish this son of a bitch didn’t live too far away……………..

I’d hazard a guess that the testing room smelled slightly better after he was removed.
What do all the Old Phucks have to be so damn pissy about everything?
My g/f is getting her ticket, and if some ol’ hambone at the test site talked to her like that I’d knock his block off.

“I would have gotten away with if it weren’t for you meddling kids!”

I must say I’m impressed at his buddies – the other VEs – doing the right thing. The VEC also did the right thing – got rid of someone who wasn’t protecting the system, but who was using it to keep new blood out. (besides, at least with ARRL VEC, you can call a number and ask questions like, “Hey, we have a kid here, he’s being vouched for by this guy we know, we know the kid, he has alternative identification, etc. Is it okay for us to test him?” And you’ll get a yes or no answer, and can move on). It proves that there might be hope for the hobby after all.

I have to say this confirms my experience with VE teams and such – in one case, I took a new ham to the exam, and he didn’t have either the money to take the test or his ID. They let him run home, get both, and let him test when he got back – even though he was the only one around at that point. That’s far beyond what is required by the VE team, but apparently they actually wanted to see a new ham get his license, if it all possible. Why would you be a VE if you didn’t want to see new hams?
