Too hamsexy for me, I’ll continue with the Yaesu stuff!
Besides it would be illegal for me to use it here unless I purchased an advanced licence.

  2. Administrator says:

    Purchase an advanced license?

  3. richard says:

    Why would it be illegal?

  4. T-Squared says:

Where is his ARES badge? A real hammy cop would have it clipped to his belt.

  5. va3wxm says:

It’s illegal because according to the rules if you hold only the Basic licence in Canada you can only use ham-specific gear. If you hold the Advanced you can use whatever you want.

  6. va3igd says:

While I may be wrong, I have heard and it is my understanding that some examiners in Canada may help you complete the advanced exam for a nominal fee, so, purchase would be a good way to put it.
Also I am sure the government agency involved will not just give you the advanced standing without some fee, even if it is only for the exam, so, purchase would be a good way to put it.
Ve3wxm is correct regarding use of radio equipment in Canada for amateurs with the “Basic” qualification.
A very hamsexy day to you all!

  7. VE3HBD says:

UH oh.. someone tell me to get rid of my motorolas!!!

(Motorola user with a basic who doesn’t care…)

  8. va3wxm says:

Yeah, well, I know some Basic holders who run amps so there you go.

  9. va3igd says:

The rules are seldom enforced here in Canadia.

Damn, after all this time and y’all diagnosed me in 5 minutes! I just like the radios, clean, simple and tough as a brick.
XTS5ks are out of my league though. Currently have a MT1000 and am trying to find (and really want) a VHF Saber II or III.

I tried kenwoods and icoms, the motos just sound and perform better.

Besides, I’m just a 5wpm extra lite (heavy) – so wtf do I know?

Since when do you need an advanced licence to operate a commercial radio in the ham bands? You can’t operate your hammy rig in the commercial bands but I have never heard of it being illegal to operate commercial radios in the ham bands. If this was true wouldn’t Ebay be pulling all the commercial rigs for sale labelled HAM RADIO in the description? What about all the IRLP and Echolink stations (Me included) running commercial rigs since ham rigs would burn up on the first Hamsexy net they connected to?

  12. va3igd says:

I believe, according to the regs, that amateurs with basic privileges are only allowed to use radios that are professionally made for amateur bands and kit radios that are specifically designed for the amateur bands.
The truth is in the regs.
Personally, I do not mind what anyone uses.

“If this was true wouldn’t Ebay be pulling all the commercial rigs for sale labelled HAM RADIO in the description?”

Well, my fav ebay listing is a VHF/UHF ham radio listed as MARS/CAP modified (i.e. someone cut the diode!!!!!!) which also means you can use it across 136-174 and 440 to 512, maybe some 800 MHz as well. Yes, it is is illegal using such a rig for Part 95 and Part 90 but it least it has full interoperability (a big APCO, MRT and IWCE term!)

Though modified rigs are illegal, expect anyone to do anything? The FCC primary mission is to auction spectrum. What burns my ass is 1.2GHz wireless video transmitters on ebay, these operate on aeronautical navigation frequencies!!!! This is my Gripe Of The Month.

  14. exkalibur says:

Well how about that, I didn’t even know this was on here. Awesome 🙂

Anyway, according to Industry Canada, you cannot use a commercial radio in the Amateur bands in Canada. The inspector I spoke to told me that the radio has to be specifically made for use in the amateur band, and can only be capable of transmitting in the same.

But, nobody is going to care. IC has given up on ham radio and clearly has no desire to do anything except collect $$.
