QRZ.com and Hamsexy

Good day all… This is my first post from the glorious Republic of China… The Portugese called it “Ilha Formosa” (The Beautiful Island)…. but it’s normally known as Taiwan…. It’s a beautiful 80 degrees here in January and I think I’m finally over the 13 hour time difference from Toronto.

Well folks – I’ve got an announcement to make. We here at Hamsexy are well known for our collective dislike of QRZ.com. Some of it was well founded, a lot of it was… well.. material for the site. However, a lot of people are getting tired of the whole deal, myself included. We run the risk of being made as a “one trick pony”, in that we are only known as a ‘QRZ-bashing’ site when Hamsexy is much more.

So, effective immediatley, myself and our front page staff are stopping our ‘assault’ on QRZ.com. Although we do not agree with a lot of what has been done on QRZ on behalf of it’s moderation team, we are teetering dangerously close to the idea that this site serves but one purpose – to call out the shortcomings of QRZ, which simply is not the case.

Running a site such as QRZ.com, the largest, oldest and most popular ham radio site on the internet, cannot be an easy task. First of all, sheer numbers make this a daunting task. Mix that in with the twisted mentality that a lot of hams seem to possess, and you’ve got a recipie for a thankless job moderating.

Hamsexy is *not* family friendly. While we aren’t nearly as filthy as some think we are (we are not a porn site, nor are we dedicated to filthing up the hobby), we do use some language and subject matter that some might find offensive. Granted, we post what’s on our minds – it’s a very real site. Some might not find it acceptable, and some might not agree with our viewpoints. That’s fine, it’s a free country. The management of QRZ is free to decide what they deem acceptable for their audience, and they are free to determine that Hamsexy isn’t something they want to be associated with. As I said, their methods leave some to be desired, but it’s their site.

I have been in contact with Fred AA7BQ (founder of QRZ) and we’ve had a very positive dialog. I think we both see eye to eye on certain issues, and have come to a mutual understanding. This impasse on QRZ bashing on this site is *NOT* a concession by any means, nor was any deal struck between us. It was just two grown, mature men coming to an understanding. It’s not a detente, more Hamsexy “moving on”.

Besides, I’m sure I’m not the only one who was getting a little tired of it all.

While I cannot change the minds of those who have been wronged by QRZ’s moderation team, nor would I endeavour to, I just wanted to let you, kind reader, know what’s been going on here. We will not be forbidding discussion either on here or the Hamsexy Forums of any sort of discussions about QRZ (QRZ bashing or otherwise). You just don’t see it here on the front page.

Thanks all – and thanks for making Hamsexy a great enough site to actually show up on QRZ’s radar screen!!!

    Bravo Bryan.

Good to take something from past experiences and move on. As I’ve said before, I am done with QRZ, and have no need to further discuss them. So in that respect, it is great to see the dawn of a new era without QRZ on our minds all the time.

I think most of the QRZ bashing is juvenile. I personally have no problem with the site, nor have I had any run-ins with the forum trolls.

Sure, I have been spanked for some of my postings on QRZ, but after thinking about it for a bit, the Mods were correct. What I had posted was not appropriate for all ages.

I believe the two can coexist for their own purposes.

It would be nice if Hamsexy was “family safe”, but apparently that will not happen, and I guess that is the way that it is.

I like being able to tell the occasional off color joke or be able to post a “not G-Rated” photoshop image, for the amusement of the readers without getting reamed for doing so.

I think that if the main page of Hamsexy remains cool and G-rated, what goes on in the forums is irrelevant, as those are 18 or older to join.

Owning an internet forum is certainly a big headache, because members of the general public are essentially nutcases. However, one should not go out making trouble by arbitrary and capricious moderation, enforcement of unwritten rules, etc. I wonder if Fred, in turn, will abolish the unwritten rules on the Zed about hamsexy?

BTW you said “this site serves but one purpose – to call out the shortcomings of QRZ, which simply is the case.” when I’m pretty sure you meant “…is NOT the case.”

Anyway, many thanks to the Hamsexy team for the Fine Business site!

    This could lead to:
    “Peace in Our Time”

Lets hope it works out better than with
Neville Chamberlain, back in 1938 regarding
    the Nazi’s !

  5. X says:

Aw god damnit. I was hoping we could continue to bash QRZ until every old hammy died and the domain became available.

I’m NOT IMPRESSED with hamsexy’s position of “bending over” for the elder/elmering community. Bashing people and gossip and cutting coax is what ham radio is all about. Did you think it was about talking on the local 2M CB repeater saying you’re “destinated” all the time? Perhaps asking some other hammy “how your signal is” every time you make a contact on HF?

Welcome to Trailer Park Radio, aka hamsexy. Bryan is a liberal, so this announcement comes as no suprise.

    Lots of sarcasm intended.

  6. n3jfw says:

Bryan is as liberal as Mikey is strait.

in other words, a little – but not much.

  7. n9avy says:

Actually, I was getting a bit bored with all the Zed bashing even though some of it was deserved. Think that this is a positive step in the evolution of Hamsexy … no, let’s not get into the debate as to how some hammies are descended from monkeys …

  8. K8TEK says:

I never had an issue with QRZ until last week.

  9. Administrator says:

Compared to you Shaun, I’m bloody Lenin. Even still, your hatred of black people doesn’t make you anything but racist.

Because it’s you, I’ll let it pass. The last person who called me “liberal” ended up missing.

Other than the fact I don’t care if someone’s gay and I think that its a woman’s own choice if she wants to kill her unborn baby – I consider myself quite conservative.

  10. X says:

Heh. I don’t hate all black people. They remind me a lot of the Canadian indians. They’re slowly evolving into a more sophisticated species, but they get distracted by greed, status, and bling, moreso than other races.

Bryan is so Liberal I’m willing to bet he’s spooned Paul Martin. Hey, you never know.

I know Bryan isn’t Liberal, I’m just screwing around. But while I’m on the topic of Liberals, I’d like to say I find their attempt at “smearing and attacking” the conservatives this entire election campaign as pathetic. I haven’t heard one announcement yet from the Liberals, offering what they will do if they’re re-elected.

Funny thing is I’m not religious at all. It’s just that the Liberals are extremely useless and corrupt, whereas the Conservatives are offering to make things right. I like Steven Harper too; he looks like a sick monkey.

  11. k8mhz says:

How does a person tell if they are ‘Liberal’ or ‘Conservative’?

Is it required to be either?

As for ‘X’, at least you are using a black name.

Malcolm X’s sister lives just a few miles north of me in a town called Woodland Park, Michigan. She is a nice lady.

  12. n3jfw says:

not a convicted felon like her brother huh?
