Mobile Command….?

Thanks to long-time friend of the site Kit N1MCC for submitting these photos on the Hamsexy Forums of quite possibly the best looking and most useless ham radio ‘command’ vehicle ever to grace these fine pages.

This truck (which, shockingly enough, is a POV), looks nice and has a nice setup, but is very ill-equipped to be any sort of useful mobile command vehicle.

The reasons are pretty obvious, but we’ll let you mull them over in the comments thread.

As always, click on the photos to make ’em bigger!

I picture a scenario where in an emergency there are conversations on each one of those radios, blaring to the “dispatcher” all at once

I’m more worried about the command station workers perishing due to carbon monoxide poisoning….

I’m going to assume that their county probably has the amateur radio operators very integrated with their chain of command and lets them actually do the mobile dispatch and such during public safety events. Here in Delaware that wouldn’t happen.

The county then probably applied through the State Homeland Security Grant Program and got the funding for this truck.

Normally, in fire/EMS command vehicles (preaching to the choir) the radios are in this rear position but normally just two radios. With this many radios it does make it very unusable. I’m counting 11 radios and they only have space (uncomfortable space) for like two people to stand in the back.

Someone get out the CO detector!

Besides the CO issue, what powers all this stuff? What about a wind/rain combination? That liftgate won’t provide any kind of protection from that. The yellow whacker lights above the console are a nice touch, too. A bit distracting if left on, I’d think.

Good giggly wiggly! They really know how to pack the ass end of an sport utility vehicle. I’m sure the beefy guy holding to 40oz drink is the ring leader. My question is with all that gear where do they store the baked goods that keeps them in such stellar shape (yes, round is a shape).

Any club that highlights is whacker cars is just that…a bunch of wannabe whack jobs.

  8. KB3JUV says:

Looks like I was wrong, it’s privately owned. The guy just lets the club use it.

  9. KB3JUV says:

After looking at it more, I’m going to have to give the guy kudos for putting that much money into a hobby like that. I remember when I organized a hamfest I had a hard time getting cheap hams to pay 10 bucks for a table to sell junk.

I bet the owner of this vehicle cringes any time he hears someone screeching to a stop behind him!!

  13. n9xcr says:

I’m guessing they were able to replace the rearview mirror with a whacker light? Why not? The mirror is useless at this point! 🙂

I am trying to figure out how he gets under bridges with that screwdriver mounted on the top. I have never seen anything like that. Why not mounted on the rear bumper. Oh, that would put it a few inches from the guys standing in the rear.

Unfortunately I know who these people are, they have no business being anywhere near an emergency.
Some of their members sit eating ho ho’s and listening to public safety radio then send E-mails to the services on how they are not operating their public safety radio system correctly.
No public safety service 100 miles from them would allow this truck anywhere near an incident, in fact its been rumored that this truck interfered with a large incident once already but they disappeared before they got caught
PS: Never go to the diner they have their meeting at…You just can’t get rid of that smell ?
