Skywarn lightning magnet

E-Dog from Grand Rapids, Michigan sent us these photos of a Skywarn truck from Grandville.

Covered with Skywarn stickers and antennae, this truck meets all the criteria for Hamsexy.

I think it’s funny that a truck obviously designed to search out storms is covered with more antennae than an airport control tower – despite urban myth (and a very deceptive episode of The Transformers), cars are NOT lightning proof – especially cars with tall antennae on the roof.

What is the grey thing… lightning detector?

Glassmounts on the other side. Why do people think
that glassmounts or magmounts are better alternatives
than NMOs? Don’t be a pussy – drill those holes!!

Six antennas (or more), two ears, how does he listen to it all?

Dashlights are a must, especially when we are worried about traffic hitting us from the rear.

and I thought my vehicles look like crap!

I don’t get why you guys hate magnet mounts so much – I just sold my car and bought a newer one, and my car was worth way more WITHOUT holes drilled into it in multiple places than it would have been with the holes. They perform just as well as NMOs, and in my opinion they’re much more versatile – you can slap them anywhere. Use a thin sheet of acrylic and you won’t even scratch your paint. No rain leaks! Try that with a NMO! Hamsexy cool!

Properly mount the NMO with an O-ring and RTV silicone = no leaks.

The gray thing looks like some sort of solar panel for a weather station. It possibly could be a temperature probe.

Check out the law on yellow lights in Michigan. Enter my call (k8mhz) in the search bar and hit ‘enter’. This will take you to an article I wrote about them. Some clarification: Jim Durham, K8COP, is a police officer and the EC of the Muskegon ARES group. The article makes it sound like the entire letter was written by Jim but it was not. His part starts after the line about ‘officer Durham’s response’. I have to take the blame for the rest of the piece.

I have a glass mount antenna on my Z-28 and it works great. I put it on to NOT look Hamsexy as it looks like a cell phone antenna. I never thought about trying to make a Yagi out of three of them!

The grey box may be a weather thing or it may be for GPS or WLAN. It’s easy to make a mobile WLAN antenna out of a wireless laptop adaper, a small plastic box and some USB cable.

I was surprised not to see a wind speed meter. One of the hams around here found out how to make them out of old hard drives. The work pretty good too. I guess the motors in the drives produce a voltage that varies with speed when you spin them.

Anyway, Kent County has a lot of tornadoes. The last one we had in Michigan was in the 50’s. Shortly after that they were outlawed in Muskegon County. They had the Army Corps of Enginners come in and build big dunes along the shore of Lake Michigan from one end of the county to the other. I’ll be danged if it didn’t work!

    Ooops!

    Correction:

The last one we had in Michigan was in the 50’s.

    Should read”

The last one we had in Muskegon was in the 50’s.

    So solly.
